Windows VS Windows

Windows vs Windows is a bit new for the users and everyone is asking why there is a comparison like this on the web, There may be two reasons to give this comparison on the web, one would be to encourage people to buy the newer version of windows and leave the Windows XP behind to promote windows 7 and the other one is to promote the applications developed for windows 7 and get some more revenue to balance the equation (Microsoft got a big loss from windows vista). I would like to share a comparison of all three versions of windows like given as under with you guys to decide what Microsoft’s intensions to give this comparison? Please share your valuable comments about this comparison.

Lucky Microsoft, Getting Malware Code Automatically

Microsoft’s ever crashing came into cash for Microsoft itself when hackers send their code automatically to Microsoft. Hackers must read this post because unknowingly they are sending their code to Microsoft. Most of the hacker create the malware code and during this period their system crashes again and again and Microsoft windows prompt to send the error code to Microsoft for evaluation and creation of a fix of the crash code. In the mean time Microsoft get the malicious code in the form of Microsoft Windows error code to create a hot fix.

As Per Rocky Heckman, a Microsoft senior security architect, told Josh Taylor from ZDNet Australia:

“People have sent us their virus code when they’re trying to develop their virus and they keep crashing their systems,” Heckman said. “It’s amazing how much stuff we get.”

Another interesting thing that came out of the blog post was the number of attacks that the Microsoft.com site undergoes each day:

According to Heckman, based on the number of attacks on Microsoft’s website, the company was only too familiar with what types of attacks were most popular.

“The first thing [script kiddies] do is fire off all these attacks at Microsoft.com,” he said. “On average we get attacked between 7000 and 9000 times per second at Microsoft.com,” said the senior security architect.

“I think overall we’ve done pretty good, even when MafiaBoy took down half of the internet, you know, Amazon and eBay and that, we didn’t go down, we were still up.”

Microsoft Security Essentials Error 0×80070643

Yesterday one of my friend gave me his IBM system to refresh the installation and all the configuration to factory settings. I did a simple restore to the operating system and the whole system was restored to its factory settings. There was no specific requirement given by him to me except one to install Microsoft security essentials on this system. I was very confident and was not bothering anything like stated above but when I hit this problem I was kind a shocked that I was not able to install despite of doing all my trick to install Microsoft security essentials on that machine. I tried to think again and find few things and one of them worked for me.

The operating system was windows XP home edition and was some four years old. I started the windows updates and installed the updated windows XP service pack on the newly installed system and then started the installation of Microsoft security essentials but still I was failed. The thing that I was missing in this whole scenario was to uninstall another security software installed by default on the newly installed system and there was another thing and that was to restart the system after installing the windows service pack three on installed system.

Windows service pack three was having the updates for Microsoft installer and as the system was not rebooted one reason of installation failure was this but on the other hand the major thing that was preventing the installation was the presence of another security software installed on that machine.

Work around to mitigate this problem of installation of security essentials is given as under:

1. If there is another security software installed in your system, please uninstall it first before continuing the installation of Microsoft Security Essentials.

2. If you have older version of windows service pack please upgrade to the newer version or at least install the latest version of windows installer.

How To Change Microsoft Security Essentials Signature Update Interval

Microsoft Security Essentials is a very popular free anti-virus, antimalware and antispyware software that proves itself a very reliable and trustable security software in the IT industry. However, sometimes Microsoft Security Essentials can fail to update its virus and spyware definitions signature database. Actually, the main problem is that Microsoft Security Essentials does not update the virus and spyware definitions according to schedule. This can lead in the form of system corrupt or Microsoft Security essential’s itself corruption and will lead you towards security breach. You can change the Microsoft Security Essentials signature update interval manually and save yourself from lot of problems. Steps are given as under:

  1. Go to Run and open Registry Editor by entering regedit command.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Microsoft Antimalware/Signature Updates
  3. In the right pane, take ownership and grant full control permissions on a registry key, a REG_DWORD value named SignatureUpdateInterval. (How you can take permission control on this key, Click on SignatureUpdateInterval dword key and go to Edit Menu and then go to permissions.)
  4. Double click on the SignatureUpdateInterval. By default, its value is 24 (in Decimal) or 18 (in Hexadecimal). Change its value to any number between 1 and 24 (both inclusive) in Decimal.
The numerical value determines how frequent and how fast (in hours) Microsoft Security Essentials will check for updates and update the virus and spyware definitions.
  5. Restart the computer.
